PMK wants Art. 356 slapped

CHENNAI April 15. Close on the heels of the TNCC working president, E. V. K. S. Elangovan's call for use of Article 356 (President's rule) in Tamil Nadu, the PMK founder-leader, S. Ramadoss, today said the Centre could invoke the provision, provided the Congress supported it.

Nothing would make the people happier than getting rid of the AIADMK regime. But the Government could be dismissed only if the Congress supported the move in Parliament, he said.

Dr. Ramadoss, who called on the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, at his Gopalapuram residence here this morning to discuss the recent political developments, told the media that important decisions would be taken at an all-party meeting.

The DMK chief told presspersons that the meeting would be held here on April 24 to evolve a joint strategy. Leaders would address a joint rally at Saidapet that evening. Asked specifically whether the DMK would demand dismissal of the AIADMK regime under Article 356, Mr. Karunanidhi said ``The suggestion has come from Dr. Ramadoss and the meeting will discuss it''. But he made it clear that the State BJP would not be invited as it was supporting the measures of the Jayalalithaa Government.

On the move to invoke the Prevention of Terrorism Act against R. R. Gopal, editor, Nakkheeran, Tamil biweekly, the DMK leader said if the legislation continued to be `misused', he would personally lead an agitation demanding its repeal.

With a date now set for the all-party meeting, it remains to be seen whether the Congress and the CPI (M) will attend.
