New approach road to bus stand

Move to relieve traffic congestion

TIRUCHI: : In an attempt to relieve the traffic congestion around the Central Bus Stand, the Tiruchi Corporation has planned to lay a new link road, which will provide a direct access route for vehicles entering the bus stand from Periamilaguparai in the city.

The new road is to come up along with the expansion of the bus stand, for which the Corporation has already acquired the adjoining railway land recently.

The Corporation has now decided to approach the district administration seeking transfer of about 4750 square metres of government land to the civic body so that the new road could be laid to provide a link between V. O. C. Road, which runs along the bus stand, and Periyamilaguparai road that leads to the Dindigul National Highway.

The expanded bus stand would have a couple of entrances on the V. O. C. Road, which is also to be widened by the Corporation.

The new road is essentially meant to provide an access road to buses entering the bus stand, thereby reducing the volume of traffic around the traffic island in front of Hotel Anand.

However, a section of local residents feel that an existing kutcha road running along K. A. P. Viswanatham Medical College Hospital and Rajaji Tuberculosis Sanatorium could be ideally developed as the link road connecting Periyamilaguparai with the bus stand.

But Corporation officials said that developing the road, which belongs to the Public Works Department, would entail demolition of a noon meal centre building, a Corporation dispensary and a few residential buildings.

This would entail an additional expenditure, Corporation officials contend.

The new road planned by the Corporation would run parallel to the existing kutcha road.

The land stretch, belonging to Rajaji Sanatorium, is now in disuse and would be adequate to lay a 60-foot-wide road, Corporation officials said.

The Town Planning Committee has already approved the proposal.

The Corporation would also request the Local Planning Authority to incorporate it as a link road in the Cantonment Extension and Development Scheme.

The civic body is also planning to seek financial assistance from the LPA for laying the new approach road.
