Nepal Maoists declare truce

Kathmandu Sept. 26. The Maoist rebels today declared a unilateral ceasefire from October two to ten to mark `Saptami' (Phoolpati) to `Purnima' of `Dashain' (Dussehra), the greatest national festival of the Hindu Kingdom.

A press statement issued by president of the Maoists, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachand here said the ceasefire from Maoist side was declared keeping in view the upcoming Nepali festival Dashain and the sentiments of the Nepali people and the civil society.

``However, if the army attacks any of Peoples Army units, the retaliation and reprisal attacks would be executed promptly,'' he said. The Maoists broke down the ceasefire and peace talks a month ago after the third round of talks between the Government and the Maoists failed. The Maoists have been demanding an interim government. — UNI
