NALGONDA: Maoists gunned down a Sub-Inspector, an Assistant SI (ASI) and a home guard after attacking Atmakur(M) police station on Friday night.

Another constable, who was critically injured, is struggling for his life at a hospital in Hyderabad. According to police sources, 12 Maoists clad in lungis attacked the police station situated on the main road in the mandal headquarters.

Police caught off guard

Before the police could realise that they were attacked, some of the Maoists tied the hands of Chandpasha, SI, Sultan Moinuddin, ASI, Lingaiah, home guard, and Karim, constable. Later, they opened fire at them from a close range killing the policemen and the home guard on the spot.

It was learnt that a Maoist fired an extra round on Karim when he tried to escape from the spot. Karim, who was critically injured, cried for help but no one could reach him on time.

Some civilians ventured to call for a private vehicle and shifted him to a hospital in Hyderabad. Fearing further reprisals from Maoists, no police officer ventured to the area till late into the midnight.

It is learnt that Maoists blasted the police station after killing the trio. A portion of the building was damaged partially, according to unofficial reports. A police source said Maoists took away the pistol snatched from the SI.

Red alert sounded

They reportedly snapped the power connection before the attack on the police station. The police sounded a red alert in the district and special police parties had been deployed in search of the Maoists.

Meanwhile, police officers at the district headquarters are yet to come to terms with the attack as Atmakur (M) has always remained a peaceful zone for the police.

"The Alair dalam, which created havoc a decade ago, had been wiped out long ago. We don't know which dalam is responsible for this latest attack," a senior police officer said.
