`Madras Day' today

CHENNAI, AUG. 21. Residents of Chennai will get to remember tomorrow the city that was Madras. Programmes have been organised to mark ``Madras Day'' by the history and heritage lovers of the city.

The action will start at 7.30 a.m. with a heritage walk around Fort St George where historians believe, the modern city began. According to a handbook published by the Corporation of Madras in 1950, the construction of Fort St. George dates back to 1640. It housed the first factory of English traders here.

In 1637, a team led by Francis Day made a voyage from Masulipatnam to Pondicherry. It was then that the idea of establishing a trading city was born.
