GJM to take Gorkhaland movement to Delhi

With the passing of the Telangana Bill in Parliament, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s agitation for a separate State of Gorkhaland in the Darjeeling hills is expected to gain momentum.

“The GJM will now take the Gorkhaland movement to Delhi and will organise a rally in Delhi tomorrow [Friday],” party president Bimal Gurung said on Thursday.

It was decided at a meeting of the GJM central committee in Kurseong to organise the rally in Delhi on Friday and one at Sukna in the Darjeeling hills on March 2.

The party leadership “will chalk out future plans for Gorkhaland” at the rally in Sukna, Mr. Gurung wrote in a social networking site.

Referring to the recent developments on the creation of the State of Telangana, he pointed out that they had “now reversed a precedent of seeking the State government’s nod in rearranging a State’s boundary.”

“The Telengana Bill was passed without the nod of the State Assembly. The Centre had set a precedent for the State Assembly to pass a bill in its Assembly before rearranging its boundary but with Telangana, the Centre has overruled this decision,” the GJM chief said.

He, however, has chosen not to go in for any confrontation with the Trinamool Congress government.
