Fishermen attack police: 2 hurt

Staff Reporter

ELURU: The 10-day `Operation Kolleru', undertaken by the West Godavari district administration with a view to freeing Kolleru lake from encroachments and facilitating free flow of flood water into the sea from the lake, turned violent on Saturday following an attack on a Sub-Inspector of Police and a constable by a striking mob of fishermen.

Injured SI of Buttayagudem K. Balaraju and constable Yeleti Manohar, attached to the District Police Office, were shifted to the district Government hospital here for medical treatment. The duo sustained grievous head injuries when the agitators resorted to stone-throwing on the police.

Hundreds of people from Chettunnapadu, Agadalalanka and Mallavaram villages in Kolleru had blocked the road since morning to register their protest against enforcement of GO 120 and stall the demolition of fish tanks by the official machinery. A pitched battle ensued between the police and the protesters when the former tried to push away women agitators so as to make way for the officials to go ahead with breaching of fish tanks.

Even as the officials claimed to have maintained their cool after the attack on the two policemen, the protesters gave a different picture. Netala Ragnaraju said the police caned several protesters, including women, and pulled up a tent put up by the agitators across the road.
