TIRUCHI: The Democratic Progressive Alliance swept all the four zonal chairman posts in the Tiruchi Corporation Council on Wednesday.

While three Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam nominees were elected unopposed in the Srirangam, K. Abishekapuram and Golden Rock zones, the Congress won the elections to the Ariyamangalam zone.

The election process was conducted separately for each of the four zones, each comprising 15 wards, in the presence of the Corporation Commissioner, B. Balachandran. However, voting was held in the Ariyamangalam zone alone, as no nomination was filed against the DPA nominees in the other three zones. T. Kumaresan of ward 1, S. Balamurugan of ward 43 and R. Arivudainambi of ward 59, all DMK, were elected unopposed as chairmen of the Srirangam, Golden Rock and K.Abishekapuram zones respectively.

The much-expected contest in the Ariyamangalam zone also went to the DPA nominee, Jerome Arockiaraj (ward 25), urban district president of the Congress. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had fielded J. Srinivasan of ward 24 necessitating secret ballot. Mr. Jerome secured eight votes against six bagged by Mr. Srinivasan.

Elections to the post of a sole member of the Appointments Committee of the Corporation would be held on Thursday.
