BC Welfare Dept. launches mobile app for its study abroad programme

The Backward Classes Welfare Department has taken a step forward towards m-governance by launching a mobile app for the benefit of students interested in availing themselves of government’s financial assistance for pursuing higher education abroad.

Under the D. Devaraj Urs Videshi Vyasanga Vethana programme, the government provides a grant of Rs. 10 lakh annually to eligible backward class candidates for pursuing master’s degree or research abroad.

Now, the application process for availing oneself of the financial assistance can be completed through a mobile app launched by the department and available for download from Google Play Store named BC Study Abroad.

Eligible students can apply through the mobile app, which also offers the option of selecting a language — English or Kannada.

The mobile app, which is a brainchild of Principal Secretary, Department of Backward Classes Welfare, Shalini Rajneesh, is reckoned to be the first such app launched by a government department for the benefit of students.

The app not only has features that allows information to be easily shared with WhatsApp, SMS, e-mail and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, but is also accompanied by a web application and has a tracker facility built in to track the status of the application.

After submitting the application through the app, the candidate need not go to the officials concerned to submit the hard copies of the documents. “We will go to the candidate. The taluk Backward Classes Welfare officer will contact the candidate on the mobile and request him to be ready with the documents on a mutually decided date of the house visit for document verification,” Ms. Rajneesh told The Hindu.

The last date for submitting applications for the scheme for this year is July 15. The department hopes to complete the verification process by July 28 and if the documents are found to be in order, the proposed foreign university will also be checked for authenticity by the respective departments.

The State-level selection committee chaired by the Principal Secretary of the department will meet on July 30 and sanction letter will be issued to candidates by August 20.
