A case of community transmission in State?

55 positive cases in State, including two deaths

With a 35-year-old male resident of Mysuru district without foreign travel or contact history testing COVID-19 positive on Thursday, concerns have been raised if this is the beginning of community transmission in the State.

Health Department officials said that he is working with quality assurance section of a pharmaceutical company at Nanjangud and had been in contact with many health care professionals. “A detailed investigation is under progress,” said Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education).

Asserting that it can be considered as “community transmission”, the official said: “We are investigating and tracking his movement history.” This is third positive case was reported in Mysuru.

Too early to say: ICMR

Rajni Kant, who heads ICMR’s Regional Medical Research Centre told The Hindu that it is too early to say if community transmission had started.

“A non-traveller can also be infected if he/she happens to come in contact with the virus indirectly either by touching surfaces touched by an infected person or unknowingly through close contact with an infected person,” he said.

However, city-based doctors said that it is time to be alert. “In the next 21 days we need to be ready for significant steps,” said U.S. Vishal Rao, chief of head neck surgical oncology and robotic surgery at Healthcare Global Cancer Centre.

Total cases 55

Confirming that the death of a senior citizen from Gowribidnur was due to COVID-19, the Health Department has said that three other new cases have been reported on Thursday. With this, the total number of positive cases in the State, including two deaths and three persons who were discharged, is 55.

The 70-year year old female who died on Wednesday, a resident of Gowribidnur in Chickballapur district, had a history of travel to Mecca and arrived in India on March 14.
