Cash stolen from temple at Siruvachur

PERAMBALUR: Two watchmen, R. Sivakumar (37) and A. Muthusamy (55), of Sri Mathura Kaliamman Temple at Siruvachur near here were murdered inside the temple premises on Friday night.

The bodies of Sivakumar and A. Muthusamy were found near a ‘hundi.’ The culprits broke open the locks of the hundi and decamped with the cash after committing the crime.

Police sources said that the culprits had gained entry through the rear side of the temple and attacked the watchmen before breaking open the stainless steel ‘hundi.’ The miscreants had inflicted injuries on the face and head of the watchmen to cause instant death, investigators said. Three special teams have been formed to apprehend the murderers.

Forensic experts visited the scene of crime to lift possible finger prints. A sniffer dog was pressed into service to track the route taken by the culprits.

The IG, Central Zone, I. Raja, DIG, Tiruchi Range, Ashok Kumar Das, and the SP, Tiruchi (Rural), N. Rajasekaran, who is holding additional charge of Perambalur district, inspected the scene of crime and conducted enquiries with the temple staff and police personnel. The three other ‘hundis’, the idols and the golden car were untouched, the Executive Officer of the temple R. Karunakaran told The Hindu.

The crime came to light on Saturday morning when the watchman for the day came for duty. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has sanctioned Rs.10,000 to each bereaved family towards funeral rites.
