State Cooperative Union warns of stir

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders in the cooperative sector on Saturday boycotted a conference of primary cooperative societies addressed by Cooperation and Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran.

The boycott was in accordance with the UDF and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) decision to boycott Mr. Sudhakaran’s official functions in protest against his habit of making adverse remarks against prominent people and political leaders. The conference of the office-bearers of the primary cooperative societies in the State was convened by the State Cooperative Union to discuss the implications of the Union government’s decision to impose service tax on cooperative banks.

UDF members of the State Cooperative Union management committee V.S. Hareendranathan, C.R. Jayaprakash, Mohammed Basheer, Manikantan (Congress), George Mathew (Kerala Congress-M), Aboobacker (IUML) and Bhupesh (CMP), along with other office-bearers of the primary cooperative societies, stayed away from the meet.

Mr. Sudhakaran inaugurated the conference at a function attended by several prominent CPI(M) leaders in the cooperative sector. Kerala State Cooperative Bank president Koliyakode Krishnan Nair; Cooperative Union chairman E. Narayanan; Cooperative Urban Banks Federation chairman P.P. Vasudevan; and others participated.

The conference decided to go on an agitation mode in protest against the Union government’s decision to impose service tax on cooperative banks. Mr. Narayanan would lead a high-level delegation to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Union Finance Minister demanding withdrawal of the tax.

The meeting also decided to hold a Parliament march of those in the cooperative sector in July if the Centre failed to take action to withdraw the tax.
