TDP leader done to death at Guntakal

ANANTAPUR: A mandal-level TDP leader of Guntakal assembly constituency, Venkatesh (40), was hacked to death allegedly by his political rivals in the railway divisional headquarters town of Guntakal in the district late on Thursday night. He was waylaid and attacked by the rivals near a cinema hall in the town, when he was returning to his nearby village Kasapuram on his two-wheeler.

According to the police, the deceased used to frequent to the town and would return to the village after spending time with friends in the evenings. He was attacked when he was about to reach the Kasapuram road in the town around 9.30 p.m. The assailants wielding hunting sickles came across his way pulled him down from the two-wheeler and hacked him repeatedly till death. Guntakal DSP Nagana and CI Narasingappa reached the spot of murder within minutes after the incident. They immediately rushed the available force to Kasapuram to prevent any untoward incident there. They also reported the matter to SP, M.S. Raveendra, who in turn, rushed additional forces to the town and the villages within a couple of hours of the incident.

The deceased was learnt to have factional rivalry with others in the village and there were police cases on both sides in the past. His wife Peddakka had contested the last MPTC elections from the village unsuccessfully. Clashes had taken places between the two sides of the elections and houses of TDP sympathisers were attackers. However, the situation was neutralised with the SP bringing the two sides to comprise.

Violent politics

Meanwhile, TDP leaders led by its district president U. Hanumantharaya Chowdary staged a rasta roko in Guntakal on Thursday protesting the killing of their partyman. He alleged that Congress was continuing violent politics and warned that such a bloody path would not yield votes for the ruling party in the next elections. In all, 37 TDP leaders and activists were killed in the district by their political rivals and the fresh killing was also part of the Congress plans to eliminate key leaders and activists before the next elections, Mr. Chowdary alleged. Traffic was disrupted for about two hours on the main road in the town due to the road blockade.
