It will function as a multi-system operator in Chennai

CHENNAI: The State Government on Saturday decided to set up a separate agency to provide cable network service.

An official release said a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Secretariat decided that the agency would function as a multi-system operator in Chennai, where the conditional access system is in vogue, and as a cable network operator in other parts of the State.

The Cabinet decided that the Government would immediately initiate preliminary steps in this regard.

The meeting also decided to extend the special scheme of supplying pulses through the public distribution system (PDS) till January 2008.

Essential articles such as pigeon pea, black gram, palmolein and wheat products were being distributed through the PDS from April 14 in Chennai, and from May 1 in other parts of the State, in an effort to bring their prices under control in the open market. In view of the positive response from people, the Government decided to extend the scheme, besides supplying wheat flour along with other essential articles through fair price shops, the release said.
