CHENNAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday announced that a sales and marketing centre for products made by women self-help groups (SHGs) in the State would be established here.

The facility, to come up near Valluvar Kottam at a cost of Rs. 5 crore, would help members of the 3.38 lakh groups in Tamil Nadu boost their earnings, the Minister said at a programme to distribute revolving funds to the SHGs.

The total savings of the groups are Rs. 1,410.40 crore.

About 400 Chennai SHGs, comprising 6,737 members, gathered at Valluvar Kottam to receive a soft loan. Each group would be given Rs. 1,000 per member. He encouraged women to start micro-enterprises with the soft loan.

Mr. Stalin said the Tamil Nadu Women's Development Corporation would implement a scheme to impart basic education to SHG women. The programme would cover 1,000 panchayats this year.

Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian said, "The Chennai Corporation will recommend SHGs with a good track record to get loans up to Rs. 2.5 lakh from public sector banks."
