Rs. 3,700-crore special package for N-K region

BELGAUM: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday announced a special package of Rs. 3,700 crore for 30 projects aimed at the comprehensive development of north Karnataka.

In a 90-minute reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the joint session of the State legislature, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Government was committed to the development of all districts in north Karnataka. A Rs. 600-crore drinking water project comprising 80 schemes would be implemented in 878 villages in north Karnataka, where fluoride content in water was high.

He said the Government would take up the Rs. 2,193-crore Chimmalagi lift irrigation project in Bijapur district to lift 20 tmcft of water to irrigate 87,067 hectares of land in Muddebihal, Basavanabagewadi, Sindagi, Indi, and Bijapur taluks. Of the sum, Rs. 63.20 crore would be spent on overhead tanks and canals in the next financial year. A proposal had been prepared to implement the second phase of the Guthi Basavanna lift irrigation project in Bijapur district to irrigate 20,690 hectares of land in Indi and Sindagi taluks and Rs. 128 crore would be earmarked for the project in the next budget, he said.

A total of 10,000 km of roads would be developed on the Public-Private Partnership model for providing better connectivity in rural areas of the State, he said.
