CHENNAI: The Chennai City Traffic Police have launched a drive against vehicles with number plates that do not conform to the norms.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Shakeel Akhter, about 400 cases are booked everyday and a penalty is levied on offenders.

“Not knowing that irregular number plate is an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, many youths, mostly motorcyclists, apply their creative mind to make the number plate look attractive… We are insisting that irregular number plates be removed on the spot and replaced with the approved design at the earliest,” he said.

A majority of the motorcyclists were not aware of the prescribed format of the number plate. “Everything is seen well on the number plate except the registration number. If one youth has his mobile phone number on the number plate, another has the sticker of his favourite matinee idol. They seem to be ignorant of the law…but that is no excuse,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) S. Manoharan.

As per norms, the registration number should be painted in black against a white background. For transport vehicles, it should be black in yellow background.
