Parliament adjourned

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Parliament was adjourned on Monday as chaos prevailed with the Opposition, led by the BJP, demanding suspension of question hour and a discussion on the Nandigram issue.

The pattern was the same in both Houses — BJP members entered the well and maintained a steady chant, forcing the first adjournment within minutes.

The decibel level did not subside when the Houses reassembled, forcing the presiding officers to adjourn them for the day.

In the Lok Sabha, V.K. Malhotra (BJP) said there could be nothing more important than the Nandigram issue when Speaker Somnath Chatterjee pointed out that all matters of importance could be taken up after question hour.

In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairman Khan rushed through the process of laying papers on the table, even as pandemonium continued.
