Nuclear deal not for weaponising: Pranab

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The India-United States civilian nuclear deal is not aimed at “weaponising”; it has much larger implications, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here on Sunday.

Some people believed “that we are going in for the civilian nuclear deal with the international community just for the purpose of having access to weaponising; that is not so,” Mr. Mukherjee said at the platinum jubilee function organised by the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan.

The country had enough arsenal and a strong force to defend itself. “So we do not need to sign the nuclear deal for weaponising. It [the deal] has much larger implications,” he said.

“I have confidence in our young people and their abilities to do wonders if they have access to superior technology,” Mr. Mukherjee pointed out.
