City girl Aditi Ashok became the first Indian to win on the Ladies European Tour after securing the Hero Women’s Indian Open at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurugram on Sunday.

The 18-year-old recorded a dramatic victory, finishing one stroke ahead of Brittany Lincicome of the United States and Belen Mozo of Spain. Needing a birdie on the final hole to avoid a three-way tie, Aditi claimed the title with a putt from four feet. “More girls have a chance to take up golf as a career now than five years ago,” Ms. Ashok said. “That’s a good change and hopefully, with my win here, a lot more girls will want to play golf.”

The result is the high point of what has been a fantastic rookie professional season for Ms. Ashok. After turning pro at the start of the year and having won the LET Tour School event in Morocco, Ms. Ashok qualified for the Rio Olympics, where she was the youngest in the field. She then posted four straight top-10 finishes leading up to Sunday’s historic triumph.
