Bharathidasan University sanctions some programmes

Programmes as per revised guidelines

Theory papers increased to four

TIRUCHI: As a new development, several colleges affiliated to Bharathidasan University have submitted applications seeking permission to start regular M.Phil. programmes this year.

So far, the university has sanctioned M. Phil. programme in Commerce for four colleges, Economics for one college, English for one, Botany for two, Chemistry for three, Computer Science for three, Mathematics for one, Microbiology for two and Physics for one college.

Applications from 20 more colleges for starting M.Phil. in one or two disciplines will be scrutinised and sanctioned after visits by inspection committees by the end of September, said Registrar V. Radhakrishnan.

The patronage for regular M. Phil. programmes is seen as a reflection of the State Government’s decision to prevent distance education wings of universities from offering the programmes and the University Grants Commission’s earlier decision to equate M.Phil. with the National Eligibility Test and the State Level Eligibility Test for the purpose of lecturership.

The M.Phil. programmes will be offered as per the revised guidelines framed last year to tone up quality.

The number of theory papers has been increased to four, which will include papers in emerging areas that may not have been covered in post-graduation.

The entire first semester, in case of a full-time one-year programme, will be devoted for theory and the second semester will be for undertaking projects.

Likewise, for part-time programmes that are usually attended by college faculties, theory will be covered in the first year and the second year will be for projects.
