Bardhan: focus on inflation not nuclear deal

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Communist Party of India general secretary A.B. Bardhan on Sunday said the UPA government should now give priority to fight the rising inflation in the country than focusing on the India-U.S. nuclear deal.

The CPI leader said the government at the Centre should not be sacrificed in the name of a nuclear deal.

“An election at this juncture will prove disastrous for the people when the rate of inflation has reached 11.5 per cent and is threatening to rise further,” he said.

“Who will be benefited if there is an early poll? Maybe the enemies of the country and the divisive forces,” Mr. Bardhan observed while speaking at a convention against the Posco steel project here.

“The deal was to be signed between India and the U.S. and not between Manmohan Singh and George W. Bush, so where is the need for hurry?” he told reporters after the meeting.

To a query, Mr. Bardhan said that at a meeting scheduled to be held on the issue on June 25, the Left parties would strive to convince the government not to go ahead with the deal. “We will try out best to convince them about our stand on the issue.”
