Army foils militants' plan to target Azad

SRINAGAR: The Army on Wednesday said it had foiled a militant plan to make a bid on the life of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in Kupwara district, with the arrest of three local youths.

On Tuesday, Rashtriya Rifles troops picked up Imtiyaz, who was moving around under suspicious circumstances at Handwara, where Mr. Azad attended a convention of Congress workers, a defence spokesman said. During interrogation, the youth confessed to plotting against Mr. Azad, the spokesman claimed adding he was in also possession of a grenade.

Imtiyaz told the troops that he had been asked to lob the grenade during Mr. Azad's visit, the spokesman said. Later, Sajjad and Akhtar, named by Imtiyaz, were also arrested. PTI
