 Collegium suggests Dipankar Datta’s elevation as SC judge

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended to the government the elevation of the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Dipankar Datta, as a judge of the court. The resolution was made at a meeting of the Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit, on Monday. Justice Datta was elevated as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 22, 2006. He became the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on April 28, 2020. His elevation is the first recommendation made by the Collegium led by Chief Justice Lalit. The Supreme Court’s judicial strength is currently 29, including the CJI. The sanctioned strength is 34.
