14 militants killed in Poonch

MENDHAR (Poonch), FEB. 15. Fourteen militants were killed by the security forces in the Poonch sector of Jammu early today in two operations.

In the first in Mendhar sector, nine militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed. Army officers, who conducted the operation, said that at around 1 a.m. they got information that a group of militants had sneaked into the country from Bimber Gali at the Line of Control (LoC).

An operation was launched to nab them. The militants, all foreigners, were killed in the encounter. Large quantities of weapons and communication devices were recovered from them. Major Arjun Singh, who supervised the operation, said that this was the first time a satellite phone was recovered from militants in this sector.

Army officers said that the modus operandi of militants had changed in the last few months. Asked about the Pakistan Army support to militants, they said that though the level of infiltration remained the same, support in the form of covering fire had definitely come down.

In the second operation, five militants were killed in the Surankote sector of Poonch.
