Consternation in the nation

We live in an oppressive world, and combat it with two main weapons. We make light of oppression — through comedy. And we underscore the gravitas of oppression — through protests. But have the two swapped roles today?

What type are you? Do you find the egg-shaped head funny or are you disturbed by how it stares in consternation, suspended in hideous technicolour? | Mihir Balantrapu

Comedy is mockery
For fun, right?
Is life really just fun?

Protest is serious,
Full of gravitas, right?
Is life really all that grave?

Do I laugh along
At a fat girl being
Likened to an elephant?
Or do I
Protest my guts out?

Do I laugh along
At an innocent man
Getting beaten up?
Or do I
Protest my guts out?

Do I laugh along
As a dude gazes lewdly
At a pretty girl
And averts his eyes comically?
Or do I
Protest my guts out?

Do I laugh along
As my philosophical dilemmas
Are laughed at?
Or do I
Protest my guts out?

Do I laugh along
As comedians exploit
Levity for
Their nefarious protest?
Or do I
Protest my guts out?

Do I laugh along
Or do I
Resign myself to
My protest
Being just
Another comedy skit?

Is every protest
That fails to gut the evil
Just another bullet that falls short,
Rendered limp by
Its own rage?

Is every comedy
That's not laughed along with
Just another opportunity wasted
To better understand
The Matrix we're in?
