Khudiram Bose and Thillayaadi Velliamai have never met, but they were both connected by a common passion – a love for their motherland. The play explores through these two forgotten characters, the way we have come to honour our fallen heroes and how the present and future will create and celebrate heroes as well.
Beyond jingoism, and certainly beyond blind faith or parochialism, these brave young people took on an entire establishment, shaking the foundation of an unjust government. One chose the bomb, the other chose the power of self-pride. Heroes were present for us at the break of dawn, so that our days could be lived in dignity and peace. We need them now. The play was created based on a concept provided by Dushyanth to the writer Mahesh Dattani. The two characters you will see on stage are two not completely unfamiliar as names but their exploits remain squarely in the dark.
Director’s quote:
“As the days went by, Mahesh Dattani seamlessly threaded this concept I had in my head into the play it is today, and in parallel, the topic of nationalism and what it is today came into focus in the news channel. This play is a lovely exploration of two forgotten souls who chose very different paths but were one in acting upon their inner voice to fight for justice. It tries to present nationalism as a fight for unity and justice, rather than a symbol of allegiance. Perhaps, who we celebrate as heroes today are reflective of what we come to hold important – these two characters were heroes, but why aren’t we celebrating them? How many more heroes are going unnoticed in this constant struggle for justice?”
