Director’s Quote:

“Keeping our theatre company’s core philosophy in mind, Gauhar is a piece inspired by the need to produce work that is original. When I began work on Gauhar, I realized how little people – including those in the world of music – knew about this amazing musician who was a complete rockstar of her times and a prodigy to boot!

Gauhar, as a play is important, because it tells the personal and professional  story of a very important figure in our musical legacy. The first woman to sing on a vinyl record in 1902, she saw the future and reach of the recording industry and flouting the purists she took up the challenge of singing a Raag in less than 2.5 mins ( all that the vinyl could take) !

With an imaginative set, authentic costumes, inventive direction and some fabulous performances combined with live singing, Gauhar aims to recreate the life and times of this fascinating woman with a voice and mind of her own.”
