Born out of intense rivalry between Karunanidhi and MGR, the AIADMK has established itself as the party with possibly the largest individual vote share.

1972

Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam founded by MG Ramachandran as a breakaway faction of the DMK. Later ‘All India’ prefixed to ADMK 

1977

Party comes to power in the State for the first time. MGR made Chief Minister, remains CM for a decade. 

1979

AIADMK becomes the first regional party to be part of the Union Cabinet.

December 24, 1987

MGR or  “puratchi thalaivar” (“revolutionary leader”) dies. Tamil Nadu plunges into grief and chaos. Looting and rioting take place, followers commit suicide. 

Jan 7, 1988

MGR’s wife Janaki Ramachandran becomes State’s first woman CM for a brief period but government dismissed after large-scale violence in Assembly.

1988

President’s Rule is imposed in Tamil Nadu. AIADMK breaks into two factions.

1989

DMK comes to power. Karunanidhi becomes Chief Minister for the third time, AIADMK factions reunify and Jayalalithaa regains party's 'Two Leaves' symbol of the party.

1991

DMK government dismissed, Jayalalithaa becomes Chief Minister for the first time; is the 10th Chief Minister of the State.

1996

She suffers a crushing defeat. In 1998, AIADMK aligns with the BJP. But the alliance is short-lived and it aligns itself with the Congress again in 1999.

2001

AIADMK wins 132 of 197 seats, but she is prevented from holding office due to a conviction. O. Panneerselvam installed as CM.

March 2, 2002

After High Court overturns her conviction, she becomes CM for the second time

2004, 2006 & 2009

Party suffers defeat in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

2011
