Serve lets the Chinese down

Siddharth Vishwakarma of India believed in his ability and worked his way to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Xin Gao of China in the opening round of the LMW-sponsored $10,000 ITF Futures tournament for men here on Monday.

Siddharth, the singles finalist at the AITA 50k tournament here a couple of months ago, dominated from the start. Xin looked equally good with his forehand, but didn’t have the serve to challenge the Indian.

The Indian, who was hitting powerful winners from the baseline, broke the Chinese in the fourth game. Xin had the chance to break him back (up 40-15), but the Indian came up with booming serves to take the game. Siddharth took the first set 6-3.

In the second, Siddharth broke Xin in the third and was driving home smoothly at 5-4. The Chinese refused to give up. He raced to a 40-0 lead, but Siddharth reeled off three points in a row to save the situation. And before any further damage, he served strong again to take the set and match 6-4.
