Sania-Rushmi pair goes down fighting in the first round

July 29, 2012 01:58 am | Updated 02:45 am IST - LONDON:

Wild card entrants Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi put up a brave fight against Chia Jung Chuang and Su Wei Hsieh but were unable todrive home that advantage to a favourable finish as the pair lost in the first round of women’s doubles tennis on court No.19 in Wimbledon on Saturday.

The Taipei pair was pretty strong at the net and won 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in about an hour-and-a-half. Sania may have won Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles and done very well in women’s doubles too, but she was teaming up with Rushmi after a long gap of nearly two years when they played together at the Commonwealth Games.

Rushmi for all her efficiency as a doubles player with 40-odd titles at the ITF-level lacked the exposure to tackle familiar opponents at the higher level.
