Sania helps India gain Fed Cup promotion

Sania Mirza came up with a special performance winning the singles and doubles matches on Saturday to help India defeat Hong Kong, China 2-1 in the play-off of the Asia-Oceania Group II Fed Cup tennis tournament in Shenzhen (China) on Saturday, according to information received here.

With this victory, India has come back into the Group I from which it got demoted last year.

The 25-year-old Sania Mirza defeated Zhang Ling 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 in the singles match after her teammate Asian junior champion Rutuja Bhonsale lost to Chen Wing Yan Venise earlier.

Later, Sania combined well with Isha Lakhani to win the crucial doubles match defeating Zhang and Chen 6-7 (7-9), 6-1, 7-5 to clinch the issue in her team’s favour.

Sania remarked later that she was really happy to pull off through two matches in one day despite nursing a quad injury. “And, it is a very satisfying feeling to have played my part in India's entry into Group I of the Fed Cup,” exclaimed a delighted Sania.
