Andy Roddick’s move to an outside court turned out to be a good one. The former champion pulled off a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 upset over fifth-seeded David Ferrer on Thursday in a fourth-round match moved to Court 13 when the court in Louis Armstrong Stadium became unplayable.
After a delay, Roddick told the tournament referee, “We just want to play,” and so the match was quickly moved to a court with 584 seats and normally used for doubles and juniors matches at this point in the tournament.
Fans rushed to grab the precious seats and saw 21{+s}{+t}-seeded Roddick make his first Grand Slam quarterfinal since the 2010 Australian Open.
He celebrated by heading to the stands to high five the fans. His next match is against the defending champion, Rafael Nadal.
