Berdych advances as Baghdatis retires

February 17, 2012 02:10 am | Updated 02:10 am IST - Rotterdam:

Second-seeded Tomas Berdych had an easy path into the quarterfinals of the ABN Amro World tennis tournament on Thursday as his opponent Marcos Baghdatis retired with an injury in the fourth game.

Baghdatis injured his left calf in the opening games, as Berdych raced to a 3-0 lead. A physio strapped Baghdatis' calf and he returned to the court, but the Cypriot looked hobbled by the injury and gave up a couple of points later.

Berdych said “I wish him all the best, that he's going to be soon back and ready.”

In other matches, fifth-seeded Richard Gasquet beat Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-3, 6-2 and Andreas Seppi overcame Philipp Kohlschreiber, Germany, 6-4, 6-2.

Caroline Wozniacki, playing her first match since losing her World No. 1 ranking, crashed out of the Qatar Open on Wednesday, squandering three matchpoints in a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) defeat to Lucie Safarova.

There was also misery for defending champion Vera Zvonareva who quit with a hip injury midway through her second round match against Romanias Monica Niculescu.

Czech left-hander Safarova saved three match points in the third set and played a superb tiebreaker to set up a third round clash with Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who defeated compatriot Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4.

In the Qatar Open, Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina crashed out after a straight-sets defeat against Vera Dushevina and Shahar Peer.

The second seed Indo-Russian pair lost the second round match 4-6, 4-6 in one hour and 12 minutes to unseeded opponents. Sania is not competing in the singles event of the tournament.

Last week, Sania and her Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova had won the doubles title at Pattaya Open. It was Sania's 13th WTA doubles title first of the season.

Last season, Sania had won three titles — two with Elena and one with Yaroslav Shvedova of Kazakhstan.
