Sasi Kumar overcomes Saketh in a pulsating contest

Sasi Kumar Mukund and Arjun Kadhe made the most of their wildcard entries in the $50,000 MSLTA-KPIT Challenger here on Tuesday.

First, Sasi Kumar overcame Saketh Myneni in a pulsating first round match and then local favourite Arjun eliminated second seed Ramkumar Ramanathan. Both of them won in straight sets.

Ramkumar looked out of touch and Arjun took the opportunity to pack off the India No. 2.

Power and ambition

In the case of Sasi Kumar, it was the power and ambition of youth that came to the fore.

The 31-year-old Saketh had defeated Sasi Kumar, 10 years younger than him, in a Futures tournament in Kolkata in March and at an indoor surface in China in October.

However, on the second day of the Challenger, the seasoned campaigner with fantastic hands, went down 4-6(1), 6-7 in the Centre Court.

Nagging back and shoulder issues could have hurt Saketh, but the finalist at last week’s Bengaluru Open, did not make his suffering palpable. Even when the chips were down, he stroked well.

Up for the task

But, Sasi Kumar was up for the task and notched up his first win against Saketh and raised hopes for the remaining part of the tournament.

Asked about the difference between the previous matches and Tuesday’s, Sasi Kumar said: “I just kept doing my job and got better. It was a close match. It could have gone either way.

“I played the important moments well. Today also he had some (health issues). Of late, I have kept things simple generally, not trying to blast the ball. I keep the ball in play and wait for my chances.

“I have played simple tennis over the last few weeks and that’s why I have had some decent results.”

The results (first round): Arjun Kadhe bt Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-3, 6-2; Sasi Kumar Mukund bt Saket Myneni 6-4, 7-6(1); Albot Radu (Mol) bt Sumit Nagal 7-5, 6-2; Maverick Banes (Aus) bt Francesco Vilardo (Ita) 3-6, 6-4, 6-1; Prajnesh Gunneswaran bt Tsung Hua Yang (Tpe) 6-4, 6-4; Lucas Gerch (Ger) bt Collin Altamirano (USA) 6-3, 6-1; Ben Pateal (Isr) b Danilo Petrovic (Ser) 5-7, 6-4, 6-4; Alexander Nedovyesov (Kaz) bt Marc Polmans (Aus) 6-2, 6-4; Sebastian Fanselow (Ger) bt Scott Griekspoor (Ned) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; F. Ferreira Silva (Por) bt Benjamin Hassan (Ger) 6-1, 6-2.
