Vishnu Vardhan and Matsui beat top seeds

Vishnu Vardhan and Toshihide Matsui of Japan knocked out top seeds Mikhail Elgin of Russia and Denys Molchanov of Ukraine 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in the doubles quarterfinals of the $50,000 men’s Challenger tennis tournament on Wednesday.

The results: At Fergana (Uzbekistan): $50,000 Challenger men:Doubles (quarterfinals): Toshihide Matsui (Jpn) & Vishnu Vardhan bt Mikhail Elgin (Rus) & Denys Molchanov (Ukr) 7-6(4), 7-6(5).

At Ilkley (Britain): €42,500 Challenger men: Doubles (pre-quarterfinals): Purav Raja & Divij Sharan bt Mirza Basic (Bih) & Cheng-Peng Hsieh (Tpe) 6-1, 6-3.

At Blois (France): €42,500 Challenger men: Doubles (pre-quarterfinals): Dean O’Brien & Ruan Roelofse (RSA) bt Bastian Malla (Chi) & Sumit Nagal 6-1, 6-3.

At Hong Kong: $10,000 ITF men:Singles (first round): Daniel Nolan (Aus) bt Sanam Singh 6-3, 6-1.

At Montpellier (France): $25,000 ITF women: Doubles (quarterfinals): Eva Wacanno (Ned) & Prarthana Thombare bt Mylene Halemai & Jade Suvrijn (Fra) 7-6(2), 6-2.

At Fergana (Uzbekistan): $25,000 ITF women: Doubles (pre-quarterfinals): Veronika Kapsshay (Ukr) & Natasha Palha bt Margarita Lazareva (Rus) & Valeriya Strakhova (Ukr) 6-3, 3-6, [10-7]; Prerna Bhambri & Ankita Raina bt Mumtoza Mamadaliyeva & Valentina Shleyn (Uzb) 6-1, 6-1.
