Unseeded Sumit makes it to final

Unseeded Sumit Nagal of India continued with his giant-killing run downing top seeded Chi Shan Jao of Chinese Taipei in the semifinals of the Gujarat NRE-ITF junior (under-18) tennis here at the DKS Complex on Friday.

Nagal, the 14-year-old Delhi boy who won the American Cup tennis championship at Miami, Florida last month, continued to impress with his all-round game.

Having downed the third seeded Naoki Nakagawa in the pre-quarterfinals, Nagal gained on confidence and got the top seeded Jao to surrender to his strong base-line game.

After winning the first set 6-4, the Indian faltered a bit in the second set and dropped it 4-6.

Nagal regained his fluency in the decider and won 6-4 to clinch the match in about two hours.

Nagal will take on unseeded Albert Alcaraz Ivorra of Spain, who also caused an upset in the other semifinal beating fourth seeded Hyeon Chung of Korea, in the final on Saturday.

Nagal was not so fortunate in the doubles final where he, and his Japanese partner Nakagawa, were thoroughly outclassed by the Korean pair of Hyeon Chung and Dukyoung Kim 6-0, 6-0.
