Rezai stuns Venus in Madrid

May 17, 2010 03:34 pm | Updated 03:34 pm IST - Madrid

Unfancied Arvane Rezai claimed the biggest title of her career on Sunday, defeating Venus Williams 6-2, 7-5 to win the Madrid Masters.

The French challenger, who hammers the ball on every shot, denied Williams the chance to cap her rise on Monday back to second in the world with a clay trophy.

The challenger won the first set and came back from 4-1 down in the second, saving Williams set points in the penultimate game before holding her nerve to serve it out a game later.
