Nadal, Ferrer in pre-quarterfinals

World No.1 Rafael Nadal advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open on Wednesday with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Monte Carlo Masters finalist David Ferrer, seeded fourth, and a victim of his celebrated countryman 72 hours previously in Monaco, also had a smooth start to his campaign in Barcelona with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Argentine Carlos Berlocq.

Ferrer has a solid 22-5 win-loss record for the season and will now face Victor Hanescu of Romania, who put out South African 14th seed Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4. A Spanish name from the past continued his injury comeback, with 2001 tournament champion Juan Carlos Ferrero belying the weight of his 31 years by advanced into the third round with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Mischa Zverev

Schiavone upset

Second seed Vera Zvonareva came from behind to beat Russian Fed Cup team-mate Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to book her place in the last eight at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Wednesday.

But, Third seed Francesca Schiavone and eighth seed Marion Bartoli suffered upsets at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Wednesday.

Bartoli was beaten 6-4, 6-2 by German wild-card Kristina Barrois in just 85 minutes and Agnieszka Radwanska put out Schiavone with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Sabine Lisicki advanced with a 6-4, 7-5 win over sixth seed Na Li. Daniela Hantuchova stretched fifth seed Samantha Stosur before the Australian prevailed 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
