Mritunjay makes semifinals

KATHMANDU: Top-seeded Mritunjay Badola overcame an indifferent start to defeat Piyush Surendra Salekar 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the boys quarterfinals of the ITF grade-5 junior tennis tournament at the All Nepal Lawn Tennis Complex at Satdobato on Thursday.

While Shashank Theertha and Aaryan Zaveri joined Mritunjay in the semifinals, the top two seeds in the girls event, Vaidehi Chaudhari and Shivani Ingle, will try to beat the Chinese challenge to set up a title clash between themselves.

The results:

Boys, quarterfinals: Mritunjay Badola bt Piyush Surendra Salekar 4-6, 6-2, 6-0; Shashank Theertha bt Michal Wozniak (Pol) 6-3, 7-5; Pengyu Li (Chn) bt Atharva Sharma 6-2, 6-1; Aaryan Zaveri bt Kabir Manrai 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Doubles, semifinals: Aditya Iyer & Piyush w/o Ryo Iizumi (Jpn) & Guanglin Wen (Chn); Gunjan Jadhav & Atharva w/o Pengyu & Guangsen Wen (Chn).

Girls, quarterfinals: Vaidehi Chaudhari bt Bhakti Shah 6-4, 6-4; Minggiao Yang (Chn) bt Na Dong (Chn) 6-3, 1-6, 6-2; Yujiao Che (Chn) bt Punnin Kovapitukted (Tha) 7-6(6), 6-3; Shivani Ingle bt Jing Yang (Chn) 7-6(4), 6-3.
