American Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan saved a match point then went on to win the US Open women’s doubles title in a third-set tiebreaker.
King and Shvedova, seeded sixth, beat second-seeded Liezel Huber of the United States and Nadia Petrova of Russia 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) on Monday. Their match had been suspended by rain in the third set on Sunday with King and Shvedova three points from defeat.
When the match resumed with King serving at 4-5, Huber and Petrova quickly earned a match point. But King and Shvedova fought it off and eventually forced the tiebreaker.
It’s their second straight Grand Slam title. They teamed up to win Wimbledon, the first major women’s doubles championship for both.
