Four-time Grand Slam champion Jim Courier will lead the United States Davis Cup team starting in 2011 after the resignation of Patrick McEnroe.
The American tennis federation USTA announced it had hired the former Australian and French Open champion as captain, replacing McEnroe who held the job for a decade.
The US leads the Davis Cup table with 32 titles, but only one in the last decade. It came in 2007 and ended a trophy drought of a dozen years.
Courier is a former Davis Cup player and was a member of championships sides in 1992 and 1995. He ended with a record of 16-10 record in singles and won his only doubles match in the worldwide team competition.
The 40-year-old former number one claimed Australian Open titles in 1992 and 1993 and won the French Open in 1991 and 1992. Courier’s first test as captain will be a first round tie against Chile on March 4-6, 2011.
