Gilles Muller flirted with an upset before second seed John Isner came through to salvage a 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (9/7) second-round win at the Atlanta Tennis Championships, his first victory since making history with his Wimbledon marathon match.
Qualifier Muller, from Luxembourg, who missed the last half of 2009 and was playing in only his second ATP event of 2010, had two match points and fired 29 aces to the 33 sent down by the American.
“I’m disappointed to lose, of course I would have wanted to win,” said Muller. “Every break point or match point I had, he was serving.
“There was nothing I could do about it. He was serving well, that was it. You had to try to return and hope for the best.”
After losing in the second round, the Atlanta win was his first victory since the big event.
