Tamil Nadu progressed steadily with Abhinav Mukund, Dinesh Karthik and skipper R. Prasanna contributing to the visitor’s bid towards securing its initial goal — a first innings lead — against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy Group A match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Monday.

Chasing Karnataka’s 290, Tamil Nadu scored 240 for five at close on the second day and will bank on Prasanna and the lower-order to sustain its hopes.

Resuming at the overnight 22 for no loss, Tamil Nadu suffered a twin-blow when S. Arvind and R. Vinay Kumar dismissed Kaushik Gandhi and Baba Aparajith respectively. Delicately placed at 39 for two in the 18th over, Tamil Nadu needed Abhinav (84, 221b, 9x4) and Karthik (38) to seal the cracks.

The accomplished duo performed the task well and as the 90-run third-wicket partnership developed over 226 deliveries, Tamil Nadu could breathe easy either side of lunch.

Abhinav had, earlier in the day, essayed a short-arm pull off Vinay but largely, his stint was more about an opener’s solidity rather than the flamboyant streak associated with southpaws. But when opportunity arose, he played lovely strokes — flicking and driving Arvind.

Abhinav’s calm demeanour found a mirror image in Karthik while Karnataka could not sustain the pressure imposed during the morning spells of Vinay and Arvind.

Karthik picked two fours in a Stuart Binny over, with the off-drive being a special shot. Just when it looked that Tamil Nadu would accelerate from its steady run-rate of two per over, Karthik was erroneously judged as caught behind off H.S. Sharath.

From 129 for three, Tamil Nadu slipped to 145 for four as leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal, rapped Baba Indrajith’s pads in line.

An alliance of left-handers soon ensued as Abhinav found an ally in Prasanna (51 batting) and the two added 50 for the fifth wicket.

Abhinav eventually succumbed to the new ball with Sharath darting one in though it was a marginal call. Later, Abhinav said: “Disappointed to have missed the hundred, but will take this knock any day as I didn’t give any chances. Plan was to bat in and I tried doing that right through as something was happening on the pitch all day.”
