Syces, owners clash at the BTC

February 16, 2012 01:53 am | Updated 01:53 am IST - BANGALORE:

There was some tension at the Bangalore Turf Club on Wednesday night, with the syces clashing with owners at the race course.

It may be recalled that syces have been on a strike for the past two days, seeking a settlement of their long standing demands. Consequently the horses were not taken out for their workouts on Monday and Tuesday.

The matter, however, seemed to have been resolved on Tuesday evening and the horses were brought in for their workouts on Wednesday morning.

But, in the evening, the Syces Association president, Mr. Mahesh and few other syces went to the BTC Secretary's cabin and allegedly made unreasonable demands, which the latter refused to accept.

A group of owners then went to stable where they were confronted by syces.

The owners allege that syces began physically assaulting them, in the course of which Mr. Choudhry and Mr. Arun Kumar were injured and had to be taken to a nearby hospital.

BTC authorities called in the police who brought the situation under control.

About 25 syces have been taken into custody and security has been beefed up at the BTC.
