The 131st Udhagamandalam horse racing season, organised by the Madras Race Club (MRC), is all set to start on Friday, with 525 horses likely to take part in the 20-race meetings.

The races this year have attracted some of the best horses in India as also renowned trainers — Pesi Shroff, Sulaiman Attolahi, Vishal Gaekwad and Neil Darasha.

Champion jockeys, including Imran Khan and Akshay Kumar will participate said Ramesh Rangarajan, Steward and Committee Member, MRC.

More than 40 outstation horses and around 35 trainers are expected, he added.

The total stakes money would be ₹6.32 crore, MRC officials said.

“With the continued aim of providing our patrons quality racing, Mr. R. Ramakrishna, chairman and senior steward of the Madras Race Club, has framed three sweepstakes races over distances of 1,200 (Hill Spinters Cup), 1,400 (Hill Champion Cup) and 2,000 metres (Hill Stayers Cup).

In addition, the iconic Nilgiris Gold Cup, which is to be held on May 28, is converted to a sweepstakes race with added money of ₹15 lakh,” said Ramesh Rangarajan.

The presence of quality horses will give a push for competitive racing.

Apart from the Nilgiris Gold Cup, the other events that will headline the season would be The Nilgiris 1000 Guineas Grade-III, to be held on April 23, The Nilgiris 2000 Guineas Grade-II on April 30 and The Nilgiris Derby Stakes Grade-I, on May 7.

Ramesh thanked P. Shankar, the Nilgiris District Collector, for his support and co-operation for the event.
