January 30, 2015 08:16 pm | Updated 08:16 pm IST - Mumbai:

The McDowell Signature Indian Derby (2,400m) which occupies the pride of place as the mother of all derbies in the country is scheduled to be run on Sunday, February 1 at the Mahalaxmi race course.

The 2015 edition offers a whopping Rs. 3.27 crore as stake-money with the winner scooping up just under Rs. 2 crore. All the 18 races over the derby weekend (Jan.31 and Feb.1) are high stakes races.

Among the 13 contestants the present racing record of trainer Malesh Narredu’s ward Be Safe is extremely creditable. He recently won the Indian 2000 Guineas and followed it up by winning the Ruia Cup in a record time over 2000m at Mumbai. Out of his nine starts he has won eight races including the Kingfisher Bangalore Derby last summer.

Other good contenders who are vying for the premier honours in this rich plum are Shivalik Storm who has beaten Be Safe last year in the Poonawalla Million, Quasar who has three derby victories to his credit, Tiger Tops who is the winner of Indian Oaks and the Bangalore Derby winner Bold Majesty who is a final entry for this race.

Among the owners, trainers and jockeys in the racing fraternity who have won the maximum number of Indian derbies are Mr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy with seven winners, trainer Rashid R. Byramji with a record of 11 winners and jockey turned trainer Pesi Shroff who achieved the great feat of winning eight Indian derbies.
