A total of 764 horses, 212 of them two-year-olds and 44 jockeys, including apprentices, will participate in the Hyderabad monsoon season, which kicks off on Wednesday (July 21).
They will be under the charge of 21 trainers including newcomer R.H. Sequeira, a former Hyderabad jockey with over a decade's experience and 150 winners under his belt.
He is fresh from a two-year stint as assistant trainer to Eugene McDermott of Ireland and after spending four years with Mark Pitman in the United Kingdom before obtaining a full-fledged trainer's licence here.
Gearing up for the new season, the Hyderabad Race Club has opened off course tote centres at Salarjung Colony, between Mehdipatnam and Tolichowki in Hyderabad, Guntur, Kakinada and Rajahmundry.
“They should become functional during this season,” said HRC Chairman, R. Surender Reddy at a press conference on Monday.
A revamp of the betting system is also on the cards in order to provide/enable kiosks, hand-held terminals and cash-card transactions, he added.
