India finished its weightlifting campaign with a lone silver, through Pardeep Singh in the men’s 105kg category, at the Carrara sports arena 1 here on Monday.

The total haul of medals — five gold, two silver and two bronze medals — improved on India’s Glasgow 2014 showing. There, India topped the weightlifting medals ladder but only with three gold, five silver and six bronze medals. India was represented in the current event by 16 lifters, eight men and eight women.

There were four finals on the concluding day and even though India was represented in all, only Pardeep Singh made it to the podium. He finished with a total of 352kg (152 in snatch, 200 in clean and jerk).

In the snatch section, Pardeep was unable to clear 152kg in his second attempt before clearing it on the final try. This put him in second place. In clean and jerk, after lifting 200kg, Pardeep failed with his second and third attempts which left him behind Sanele Mao (Samoa), who compiled a total of 360 kg. Owen Boxall (England) was third with 351kg.

Gurdeep Singh was in contention for a medal in the men’s +105kg but was overtaken in the final stages leaving him in fourth place with a total of 382kg.

In the women’s section, Lalchhanhimi finished eighth with a total of 194kg, while Purnima Pandey was placed sixth in the above 90kg class, after finishing with a total of 212kg.

The results: Men: 105kg: 1. Sanele Mao (Sam), 154-206=360, 2. Pardeep Singh (Ind), 152+200=352, 3. Owen Boxall (Eng), 152+191=351. +105kg: 4. Gurdeep Singh (Ind), 175+207=382.

Women: 90kg: 8. Lalchhanhimi (Ind), 85+109=194. +90kg: 6. Purnima Pandey (Ind), 94+118=212.
