Spain has become the fifth team to win the basketball world cup more than once

Spain won its second basketball world cup in the 2019 edition, the United States is the joint-most successful in the tournament with five titles

Not as mainstream as the NBA, the FIBA Basketball World Cup is nevertheless one of the sport’s two major world events, the Olympics being the other. Spain won its second title earlier this week, becoming the fifth team to win the tournament more than once.

A look at the most successful teams and players in the history of the World Cup shows that the United States has won the most matches in the competition and has the best overall win % among countries that are currently playing. It has won the competition five times and is the joint most successful country in the history of the competition.

With 337 points in 10 games (an average of 33.7 points per game), Nikos Galis of Greece has the highest scoring average in the competition’s history.

Jae Hur of South Korea holds the record for most points in a single game. He scored 54 points against Egypt in the 1990 World Cup.
